May is Mental Health Awareness Month – a vital time to check in with ourselves and each other, challenge stigmas, and cultivate practices that support our mental and emotional equilibrium. Shift Your "Shoulds" to "Get Tos": Finding Freedom in Perspective

Letting go of shoulds

How often does your inner dialogue sound like a list of obligations? "I should exercise," "I have to finish this project," "I should be more productive." This language, while common, can create internal pressure and drain our energy, raise stress hormones, framing life as a series of burdens. What if we gently shifted that perspective? Try replacing "should" or "have to" with "get to" or "choose to." "I get to move my body," "I get to dedicate my focus to this project," "I choose to rest right now." This simple linguistic shift reframes tasks as opportunities or choices, fostering gratitude and a sense of agency rather than obligation. It acknowledges the fortune inherent in having the capacity, the time, or the resources to engage with these activities, reducing resistance and inviting more ease into our daily experience.


Extend a Hand: The Power of Supporting Another in Need

Mental health struggles can feel incredibly isolating. One of the most powerful antidotes to this isolation is connection. This month, consider how you can intentionally support someone else, especially someone else who is less fortunate. It doesn't need to be a grand gesture. Sometimes, the most meaningful support is simply letting someone know you're thinking of them – a text message, a call, or offering a listening ear without judgment or trying to "fix" things. Ask open-ended questions like, "What do you want me to know about your present life?" or "What can I do to help?" Sometimes, just sharing space or offering a moment of normalcy can make a world of difference. Remember, supporting others often strengthens our own sense of purpose and connection, benefiting everyone involved.


Tune In: Your Body Speaks Volumes, Are You Listening?

Feel your body

Our bodies are constantly communicating with us, offering wisdom about our internal state. Stress often manifests physically – tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, shallow breathing, stomach knots, fatigue. Conversely, ease might feel like relaxed muscles, deep breaths, or a sense of groundedness. Taking moments throughout the day to pause and intentionally listen to your body is a profound act of self-care. Where are you holding tension? What sensations are present? Do you feel energized or depleted? You don't need to immediately change anything; the first step is simply awareness. This practice of interoception – sensing your internal state – builds a stronger mind-body connection, helping you recognize needs (like rest, movement, or hydration) before they reach a critical point.

When Your Body Whispers: Using Technology as a Guide

Sometimes, the signals from our body are subtle, or we've become accustomed to overriding them. In these cases, technology can act as a helpful translator or amplifier. Tools like Heart Rate Variability (HRV) monitors can offer insights into your nervous system's state – indicating whether you're more in a stress response (sympathetic) or rest-and-digest mode (parasympathetic). Sleep trackers can highlight patterns in your sleep quality and duration, often correlating directly with mood and cognitive function. This data isn't meant to replace your internal wisdom, but rather to supplement it. Seeing quantifiable information about your sleep or stress levels can sometimes validate feelings you couldn't quite pinpoint, prompting you to investigate further or make adjustments to support your body's needs. Think of it as providing clues to help you start or deepen the conversation with your own physical experience.

Remember Your Worth: You Are Loved, Regardless of Success

Love yourself

In a world that often equates value with productivity, achievement, and external validation, it's easy to internalize the message that our worth is conditional. We can get caught in cycles of striving, perfectionism, and harsh self-criticism when we inevitably fall short of impossible standards. A cornerstone of mental well-being is anchoring into the truth that your inherent worth is unconditional. You are valuable simply because you exist. You are worthy of love, compassion, and care, regardless of your job title, your accomplishments, your relationship status, or how "put together" you feel on any given day. Cultivating self-compassion – treating yourself with the same kindness you'd offer a dear friend – is essential. Remind yourself, especially during challenging times: You are enough, exactly as you are.

Mental wellness is a practice, woven into the fabric of our daily lives. By exploring perspective shifts, fostering connection, listening deeply to our bodies (with or without tech aids), and rooting ourselves in unconditional self-worth, we build a more resilient and compassionate foundation for navigating life's complexities.
